What is a pre-existing condition and can it be excluded from coverage?
What is a pre-existing condition and can it be excluded from coverage?
A pre-existing condition is a health or physical condition that existed before the enrollment date on an insurance policy.

Under HIPAA, the only pre-existing conditions that may be excluded from coverage are those for which medical advice, diagnosis, care or treatment was recommended or received within the six-month period before the applicant's enrollment date.

Most health insurance companies place a pre-existing conditions clause in their policies to protect the company from any condition the applicant had prior to purchasing a new policy. The specifics of these clauses can and do vary by insurance company.

It is very important that you understand the pre-existing conditions clause of the insurance company for which you are considering applying for coverage.

Please talk to the HealthCare for One, or your broker, to ensure you understand this important topic.
